Cass Scenic Railroad West Virginia State Park
At Cass Scenic Railroad State Park, board a historic Shay locomotive and ride through the heart of Appalachia to Bald Knob — the third-highest point in West Virginia — where two states stretch before you.
Our Story
A Living Piece of History
Cass Scenic Railroad State Park preserves one of the most authentic examples of Appalachian logging history in America. The Cass Scenic Railroad runs on the very same grades that once carried timber out of the highlands — today those tracks carry visitors into a world unlike any other. The town was established in 1901 by the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company as a company town to support logging of the surrounding mountain forests.
Visitors step into a remarkably preserved world — original company houses still stand along the banks of the Greenbrier River, and the same steep-grade Shay locomotives that once hauled timber now carry passengers through forests of birch and spruce to breathtaking mountain summits.
The park is home to the Cass Historical Museum, the Cass Historic Theater, and a living community that has embraced its industrial heritage as a source of pride and wonder.
