Cass Scenic Railroad State Park offers a variety of activities including scenic train rides, biking, boating, fishing, geocaching, hiking, museums and outdoor recreation.
The main attraction at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park is a ride aboard a historic steam-powered train. Departing from the town of Cass, scenic excursions take visitors through the mountains and into some of West Virginia’s most beautiful high-elevation scenery.
The trip to Bald Knob is one of the park’s most popular experiences. At 4,842 feet, Bald Knob is the third highest point in West Virginia and offers sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Shorter excursions to Whittaker Station also give visitors a chance to experience the railroad’s history and enjoy beautiful mountain views.

Take in the scenery and get some exercise while visiting Cass. While the park does not have its own hiking and biking trail system, the Greenbrier River Trail can be easily accessed from the park.
Cass Scenic Railroad State Park has mountain bikes and e-bikes available for rent. Stop in at the Company Store and ask the staff for details about bike rentals.
Cass has one- and two-person kayaks available for rent. Enjoy a peaceful float on the river from Cass during the spring and early fall when weather and water conditions are best.
Water levels must be at least four feet for optimal kayak conditions. Be sure to check the flow rate before making your reservation.
Fishing in the waters around Cass is one of the park’s most popular activities. The Greenbrier River is located just in front of the Cass Company Store and within walking distance of the Cass Company houses.
Anglers can try their luck catching trout and smallmouth bass. Nearby waters around Spruce and Shaver’s Fork of the Cheat River are also known for excellent fishing opportunities.
Are you up for an adventure? Try geocaching at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park and work together to find hidden cache sites throughout the area.
All you need is a spirit for adventure, a small item or two and a smartphone with GPS. It’s a fun way for families, friends and explorers of all ages to experience the park in a new way.
While there is not an official golf course at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park, visitors can maintain their game at the nearby Snowshoe Mountain Resort.
Designed by Gary Player, the 18-hole course at Snowshoe is one of the area’s top golf destinations and makes a great addition to a Cass getaway.
Take in the views and get your heart pumping during your visit to Cass. Walking tours of the Historic Town of Cass are available Tuesday through Sunday at noon and 4 p.m.
If you are looking for a longer walk, hike or bike ride, a portion of the Greenbrier River Trail can be easily accessed from the park.
The vast Monongahela National Forest offers numerous hunting opportunities near Cass. Typical big and small game in the area include deer, bear, turkey, grouse and woodcock.
Visitors planning to hunt should review all current regulations and obtain the proper West Virginia hunting license before heading out.
Discover more about the railroad, the town and the people who helped shape Cass at the Cass Historical Museum. Exhibits share the story of the railroad and the community built around the lumber industry.
Visitors can also stop by the Cass Historic Theater to watch a documentary about the history of Cass and the Cass Scenic Railroad. For even more history, nearby Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park offers a Civil War museum, lookout tower, hiking trails and occasional reenactments.
